Things to do in Famagusta
The Castle is a medieval fortress which guarded the harbour and Famagusta town from potential enemy attacks, and was the main entrance to the town. It was originally built by the Lusignans in the 14th century and later modified by the Venetians. It was named after Shakespeare’s Othello, who killed his love Desdemona here and has previously been named ‘impenetrable fortress’ as the deep ditches surrounding it made it very difficult to attack. Visiting the castle is sure to make you step back in time with battered walls, low arches and old guns and cannons available to view.
The Ghost town in Famagusta was once a very glamorous area, the beautiful beach and clear sea made it a favourite, attracting thousands of visitors each year. An invasion from Turkish forces in the seventies made the people of the town flee immediately, leaving their belongings behind. To this day the Ghost Town remains very derelict with empty buildings including what once was luxury hotels. There are many tours which you can take to learn about the history of the Ghost Town and view what was left behind.
Canbilat, a commander who was responsible for the siege of Famagusta, reportedly rode his horse into the blades of a machine made to prevent army from entering the Bastion. Canbulat’s head was chopped off in the process and he allegedly went on to fight for a further 3 days with his head under his arm. His tomb is now at the Canbulat Museum which was restored in 1968 with the front section turned into an Ethnographic and Archaeological museum.
